Technical Solutions' New ARM-Based Medallion Computer Module Utilizes DiskOnChip for Bulk Storage

DiskOnChip Enables High-Performance Medallion Computer Module to Cut Development Costs Up to 80%

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2002-- M-Systems (Nasdaq:FLSH - news), a leader in flash disk data storage products, today announced that Technical Solutions Inc. (Techsol) has designed DiskOnChip into its low-cost, high-performance Medallion line of computer modules.

M-Systems' DiskOnChip Millennium will provide 8 to 32 megabytes of on-board storage for the Medallion line, designed to enable rapid development of complete embedded solutions for non-PC platforms, mobile devices and Internet appliances. Each Medallion module encapsulates all the essential pieces common to all embedded devices: a low-power CPU with RAM and local storage.

The Medallion CPU module, allows designers to dramatically shorten the amount of time spent on hardware development by eliminating the integration of all the different hardware pieces, timing issues and porting an OS to the hardware since the Medallion comes pre-loaded with the Linux OS.

The module, complete with USB host and device ports, occupies an extremely small footprint of only 2-inches by 2-inches. In addition, Techsol preloads the core software needed to support various applications, including a boot-loader and debugger, the Linux operating system and drivers for all the peripherals.

"We see the near-term future of embedded technology dominated by ARM hardware with Linux and Java software. The Medallion line provides access to state-of-the-art technologies for companies that either don't have the resources or the sales volumes to justify developing it themselves. DiskOnChip is the only technology that meets our size and cost requirements for Linux file storage," said Brian Empey, president of Techsol.

"Techsol's Medallion is ideally suited for the markets that the DiskOnChip was initially developed for -- embedded and other emerging niche applications such as car navigation systems and mobile devices," said Chuck Schouw, president and CEO, M-Systems. "DiskOnChip's quick integration features are well-positioned to work with Techsol's goal to reduce development time for designers."
